President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are likely to interrupt one another during CNN’s telecast of the first presidential debate in the run-up to the 2024 election. But they will also be cut off by something else.
CNN plans to run commercials during the event, according to two people familiar with the matter, which has run free of ads for many years under the management of the non-partisan Commission on Presidential Debates. The candidates have in this cycle opted to forego the Cpd’s traditional structure, which calls for a series of debates to be held closer to the November election.

I’ve always been a big fan of cozy small-town shows. I grew up on Gilmore Girls, watch Ginny & Georgia religiously, and never pass up a chance to return to the comfort of One Tree Hill. But somehow, I’ve never gotten around to bingeing Netflix’s Virgin River.
The romantic drama, which premiered in 2019, centers on Mel Monoe (Alexandra Breckenridge), a nurse practitioner and midwife who goes to work in the tiny, remote Northern California town of Virgin River in search of a fresh start — but like any charming small town, it comes with complications. The show is based on the book series of the same name by Robyn Carr, who also serves as an executive producer. In May 2023, it was renewed for a sixth season.

A new app wants to become the “Netflix of AI,” allowing users to watch one of its AI-generated animated series on-demand. Not yet moved? The Showrunner app then allows the viewers to use AI to create their own episodes of the show.
AI production company Fable Studios has today launched the app in its Alpha stage to the public. With it, they’re releasing the first two episodes of an animated series created with Showrunner’s AI tools, a tech-industry satire called “Exit Valley” that looks quite similar to the animation style seen on “South Park” or “Rick and Morty.”

Sara Ramírez won’t be back as Che Diaz on And Just Like That… next season, and series star Cynthia Nixon is opening up about why.
Nixon, who plays Miranda on Max’s Sex and the City continuation, tells our sister site Variety that Ramírez’s exit was a mutual decision between Ramírez and showrunner Michael Patrick King. Ramírez “created such an amazing character — such a controversial character, but such an amazing character,” Nixon says, but “I think they felt, and Michael Patrick felt, that that character had run its course. The Daily Show is seeking audiences for their “Indecision 2024” broadcasts from the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this July.
The full week of shows coincides with the dates of the RNC: Monday, July 15 through Thursday, July 18. It remains unclear if Monday-night host Jon Stewart will host any of the episodes.

This week, Krista brings back her 2020 interview with comedian, actress, writer, and producer Michelle Buteau. At the time of this conversation, Buteau had just released her comedy special, Welcome to Buteaupia, and was on a non-stop run of projects -- hosting The Circle, appearing in films like Always Be My Maybe, and in TV shows like First Wives Club and Tales of the City. She was also just a few months away from publishing her autobiographical book of essays, Survival of the Thickest.
Cut to 2024, and Buteau has turned that book into a hit Netflix series by the same name. She's also expanded her hosting resume, adding two seasons...

A former producer on The Apprentice is speaking out about what he saw of then-host Donald Trump on the set of the show, after his 20-year non-disclosure agreement finally reached its expiration. In a lengthy essay for Slate, Bill Pruitt makes several explosive revelations about what went on behind the briefcases and boardroom tables. Among the most shocking claims in the story is that Trump once used the “N-word” to describe Season 1 contestant Kwame Jackson while deliberating about who should win. According to Pruitt’s piece, former show judge Carolyn Kepcher suggested that Jackson would be “a great addition to the organization,” after he managed to overcome several obstacles while managing Trump’s now-defunct casino Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. After discussing Jackson’s decision-making for a few more lines, Trump then allegedly said, “Yeah, but, I mean, would America buy a [n-word] winning?” Pruitt said the reaction in the room was palpable,...

Shailene Woodley is setting out to capture the power of women.
The “Big Little Lies” alum returns to novel-adaptation ensemble TV with “Three Women,” based on Lisa Taddeo’s bestselling book of the same name. Woodley plays Gia, a writer who is grieving the death of her family and sets out to interview three “ordinary” women to tell her their stories of love, life, and loss.
Those trio of women include Betty Gilpin, who plays a stuffy housewife who begins an affair, DeWanda Wise as a woman in an open marriage that quickly becomes a quadruple (one more than a thruple), and Gabrielle Creevy who stars as a student that gets entangled with her married English teacher.
The synopsis reads: Three women are on a crash course to radically overturn their lives. Lina (Gilpin), a homemaker in suburban Indiana, is a decade into a passionless marriage when she embarks on...

While Netflix’s true-crime catalog continues to grow, its 2024 titles have been a mixed bag so far. There’s been some gems like An American Nightmare, which cleverly subverts viewer expectations and goes against the grain by actually holding law enforcement accountable. Others, like What Jennifer Did (which has drawn controversy for its alleged use of AI-manipulated imagery), merely rehash the facts of clear-cut cases and ultimately fail to bring anything revelatory to the table.

Early on in Jim Henson: Idea Man, director Ron Howard‘s admiring and affecting biographical portrait of the genius behind the Muppets, Henson‘s longtime collaborator Frank Oz recalls, “He was so internal and quiet that his inner life must have been sparkling.” I can attest to that. One of my fondest memories is an interview I conducted with Henson in his company’s fabulous New York townhouse (dubbed the “Muppet Mansion”), including a visit to the Muppet Workshop, in advance of 1987’s A Muppet Family Christmas, a terrific special that featured lovable characters from The Muppet Show, Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock (among others) all gathering at Fozzie Bear’s mother’s house for the holidays. We had only been talking a few minutes when I realized my tape recorder had barely inched forward. Turns out it was set on voice activation, and it had only picked up my questions,...

Mark Johnson has produced some of the most distinctive movies and TV shows of the past 40 years. Think “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Rain Man,” “The Notebook,” “The Holdovers,” “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.”
Yet Johnson was a surprise choice by AMC Networks to lead its massive investment in building out the Anne Rice literary universe in multiple TV series. AMC bought the TV rights to Rice’s literary vault of Southern Gothic vampire tales in 2020.

With TV viewing mostly down across all genres on Memorial Day, late-night kicked off a mostly dark week Monday with each of shows airing repeats. Still, someone still had to win the late night ratings race. On Memorial Day 2024, it was ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! that emerged the victor.
ABC’s 11:35 p.m. late-night offering rebroadcast its April 24, 2024 episode on Memorial Day, and per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data, the telecast averaged 1,175,000 total viewers with 157,000 P18-49. That’s -26% and -5%, respectively, from the previous Monday’s episode (a new one).

“Expats,” the immense yet intimate six-part series from director and showrunner Lulu Wang, tells the story of three American women living in Hong Kong who become inextricably linked by tragedy. That loss, so harrowing it’s often kept vague in plot synopses, is the disappearance of a young boy. Left unattended in a crowded night market for a split second, Gus (Connor James) is just gone. There’s no indication if he’s been taken or he merely wandered off. His mother, Margaret (Nicole Kidman), is inconsolable.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Evil Season 4 Episode 2 “How to Train a Dog.”] Let’s just say that we have a feeling Sheryl (Christine Lahti) wants to take Leland (Michael Emerson) down even more than ever before after the latest Evil episode. Sheryl tries to gain some footing at work, but it’s run by a misogynistic board of men and demons, so that’s easier said than done. When she speaks up in a meeting, offering up her connection as Kristen’s (Katja Herbers) mother—the biological mother of the Antichrist— Leland shuts her down; the board doesn’t like hearing from women because they consider them to be weak. He suggests she prove herself by getting Greg Bruni (Danny Mastrogiorgio) in line, with the demon inside him starting to peep through. She does just that by cutting his finger off. She delivers it to the Manager, but even that’s not enough to get a promotion.
