Generation creators Daniel and Ben Barnz have lined up their next show.
The married couple has landed a pilot order at Amazon for the marching band dramedy Band, with John Benjamin Hickey (Pitch Perfect, The Big C) and Chanté Adams (A League of Their Own, A Man in Full) set to lead the ensemble cast.
The potential series, like Max’s Generation, follows a group of teens as they navigate adolescence while finding a sense of belonging in their school’s marching band.
Rounding out the cast are Miguel Ángel Garcia (The Long Game, Promised Land) as star Axel; newcomer Lynley Eilers as his fiercely loyal best friend Sasha; Alex Fitzalan (The Society, The Wilds) as sexy Simon; Henry Hunter Hall (The Watcher, Hunters) as heartthrob drummer Evan. Hickey will play the band’s fearless leader Cole, while Adams is set as his right-hand Zadie.

Amazon MGM Studios has handed an official pilot order to Band, a drama created and executive produced by Daniel Barnz who will direct the pilot and serve as showrunner on the potential series. The star-studded world premiere of The Substance brought A-list glamour to the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday night. Leading the red carpet charge were acting legends Demi Moore and Dennis Quaid, joined by rising talents Margaret Qualley and director Coralie Fargeat.
All eyes were on Moore, 61, who defied age in a champagne Schiaparelli gown. The ageless beauty exuded confidence as she posed fiercely for photographers on the famed Palais des Festivals red carpet.
Moore’s co-star Quaid, 69, looked dapper in a classic tuxedo. The veteran actor flashed his trademark grin alongside his younger on-screen love interest, the 28-year-old Qualley.
Qualley, the daughter of Andie MacDowell, has been earning raves for her breakout performance in the psychological thriller. She stunned in a pretty white and pink dress with finely embroidered designs and feathers along the bottom edge.
French director Fargeat, who turned heads in a pale pink dress, rounded out the film’s glamorous quartet.

Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

Theaters are in a slump longer than they should be. The last five weekends averaged about $70 million total, while in 2019, the same five weekends with lower ticket prices averaged $190 million. That means success in VOD revenue is all that more important for studios. Even so, on the two top 10 lists from iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue), half the slots are taken by companies other than the usual top five.
Results overall reflect the cutback in releases due to last year’s strikes, some longer windows for bigger-grossing studio releases, and, in most cases, a weaker response to other films that made little theatrical impact. All that made it easy for “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.), by far the year’s biggest hit, to repeat as #1 on both charts for the third week. And that’s with a higher price than usual.

Who doesn’t love an underdog story in sports, especially if it’s based on true historical accounts? In the 1950s, five young Mexican-American boys made history with golf clubs in their hands. Julio Quintana’s docudrama The Long Game talks about the racial discrimination Mexican-Americans faced in the last century and how a group of caddies earned the respect their community deserved.
Spoilers Ahead
What happens in the film?
Joe, Gene, Mario, Felipe, and Lupe are all caddies who work at a prestigious golf club run by Americans. Belonging to poor families, they do all sorts of odd jobs for the rich old men and their kids, who are the members of the club. On the other hand, there’s Jb Pena, a former soldier who served in World War II and returned to society without any accolades thanks to his ethnicity. Jb resumed his life as a superintendent in the San Felipe School.

For a second consecutive weekend, Civil War held the top spot of the box-office weekend, albeit by a mere margin of $0.9 million.
In its second week of release, A24’s Civil War brought in $11.1 million for the studio, to raise its overall total to $44.9 million. This proved just enough to best the Universal Pictures release Abigail which debuted in second place with $10.2 million over the weekend. Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was forced to third place where it added $9.5 million to lift its four-week total to $171.6 million for Warner Bros. Studios. The second debut of the weekend, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare landed in fourth place where it made $9.0 million for Lionsgate Films. The Crunchyroll release Spy x Family Code: White debuted in fifth place with $4.9 million.

HarbourView Equity Partners has made an investment in Mucho Mas Media, the Los Angeles-based content company behind the new golf-themed movie “The Long Game.”
The deal calls for HarbourView Equity to executive produce films with Mucho Mas co-CEOs Javier Chapa and Vincent Cordero. With HarbourView’s investment, Mucho Mas intends to expand the scope of its activity in film and TV. HarbourView CEO Sherrese Clarke Soares is on board as an executive producer of “The Long Game,” an adaptation of the Humberto Garcia novel “Mustang Miracle.” The film tells the true story of a group of Mexican American caddies who created their own golf course in the South Texas brush in 1955 and two years later won the Texas State High School Golf Championship.

No, it's not 2004, but Shrek and Donkey are partying like it is. "Shrek 2," the beloved hit sequel to the original DreamWorks animated classic, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year -- next month, to be more exact -- and Universal Pictures decided to celebrate by re-releasing the film in theaters over the weekend. While it didn't make a fortune or anything, the movie did end up making its way back into the top ten on the box office charts.
Playing on over 1,500 screens, "Shrek 2" pulled in $1.35 million over the weekend, which was just enough to give it the number nine spot on the charts. That put it just ahead of "Suga | Agust D Tour 'D-Day' The Movie" and just behind "The Long Game" ($1.39 million), both of which were newcomers in theaters. It was Alex Garland's buzzy "Civil War" ($26 million) that took the lion's share of attention, landing...

Can you believe that Dennis Quaid turned down, not one, but two movies made famous by Tom Hanks? Like, what? So here’s the gist.
Dennis Quaid Jokes He And Tom Hanks Have A Lot To Talk About After Turning Down Roles That Got Popularized By Hanks
Let’s do a quick flashback to when Dennis Quaid just casually told us that he turned down the opportunity to star in the 1998 fim “Big,” as a result of receiving several job offers at the time.
We all know what happened, Tom Hanks replaced him for the lead role in “Big” and made “Big” big (sorry I couldn’t resist.) “Big” did turn out to be a very successful movie. In fact, one of the most successful in Hanks’ career.

Alex Garland’s dystopian thriller Civil War scored the biggest North American opening weekend in A24’s history and became the company’s first to debut at number one as it arrived on an estimated $25.7m.
Delivering A24’s biggest debut weekend since Hereditary arrived on $13.6m in 2,964 sites, the story of a journalist, played by Kirsten Dunst, who reports on an unfolding crisis in a divided America not only exceeded box office predictions of $20m, but overperformed in markets ranging from Los Angeles to El Paso in Texas.
Arriving on 3,838 theatres, the $50m production was also the company’s widest release from the outset.

Concert film Suga – Agust D Tour ‘D-Day’ The Movie from Trafalgar Releasing took in $990k for Saturday alone, rounding out the North American box office top ten — testament to the power of concert films post-Covid and the enduring popularity of the K-Pop powerhouse. The band is currently on hiatus as members entered military service required in South Korea. But Suga, the second oldest, got in one last solo concert in Seoul last year. It was released into theaters globally for two playdates on April 10 and April 13, for a cume of $2.2 million.
The film played at 723 locations Saturday in the U.S. ($910.3k) and 64 in Canada ($80.6k). (Total screens 787.)
The showtimes were limited, mostly to one 7 pm screening, although some theaters had more than one. Additional screenings continue at select locations through April 21.

Alex Garland’s “Civil War” opened to an estimated $25.7 million this weekend, nearly double the best wide opening for any previous A24 title. It’s also about $7 million more than the combined openings last weekend for “Monkey Man” (Universal) and “The First Omen” (Disney).
Despite its B- Cinemascore, the near-future domestic dystopia came in over 25 percent better than projections. The A24 brand, the indefatigable war theme, advance interest (including a widely covered SXSW premiere), topicality, originality, IMAX sales, and mostly positive reviews propelled it to success.
With a reported production cost of at least $50 million, and uncertainty about foreign interest (initial grosses incomplete), it will need to be more than an initial sensation. Even so, particularly with likely significant post-theatrical interest, it initially appears that A24’s risk will pay off.
An opening on this scale for a non-franchise independent title only adds to A24’s bona fides. In recent...

Alex Garland’s Civil War performed close to our expectations this weekend, grossing an estimated $25.7 million (via ComScore’s early numbers) to post what’s easily A24’s biggest opening weekend ever. In fact, it isn’t even close, with Alex Garland’s speculative film almost doubling the previous record holder, Hereditary, which opened with $13.6 million. This is quite a coup for what’s being billed as the studio’s biggest-budget movie ever, which is a still modest $50 million. Given the rave reviews and the fact that it will likely become a water-cooler film, one can expect the film to hold up relatively well over the next few weeks, with it is unlikely anything next weekend is going to over-index unless horror flick Abigail winds up becoming a smash.
Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire dropped a relatively modest 50% in week two to post a $15.4 million weekend, for a $157.9 million total.

April has been a slower month compared to March, but if nothing else, this weekend saw a popular indie studio break a few personal records with what might have been a controversial release. Read on for the weekend box office report.
A24 released Alex Garland‘s fourth feature as a director, “Civil War,” starring Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Maura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Nick Offerman, and Jesse Plemons, into 3,838 theaters on Friday – the studio’s widest release ever. It came into the weekend with a reported production budget of $50 million – another record for the studio – and mostly decent reviews with 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, following a premiere at the SXSW Film and TV Festival.
It was able to make $2.9 million in Thursday and earlier previews, which were compiled into the movie’s $10.8 million opening day, and it then ended with an estimated $25.7 million to take first place on opening weekend.

Sasquatch Sunset directors Nathan and David Zellner always wondered what these hairy giants do when they’re not walking – the only Bigfoot footage available has been a minute of a supposed Sasquatch wandering in the northern California woods. They decided to flesh that out in unique dialogue-free comedic imagining of the creatures’ daily life – eating, fighting, etc. Stars Jesse Eisenberg, Riley Keough, Christophe Zajac-Denek and Nathan Zellner are unrecognizable as the hairy tribe of four that entranced Sundance (see Deadline review). Bleecker Street is opening the film, written by David Zellner, executive produced by Ari Aster, in 9 theaters in New York, LA, San Francisco and Austin, ahead of a big jump to about 800 screens next week.

The Long Game released April 12, 2024.
Dennis Quaid is a man I grew up with. As a child I watched his films on repeat with a select few being near weekly viewings. In a way, he was my unconventional babysitter. Through Jaws 3D, Inner Space, Enemy Mine and Dragonheart I was whisked away to magical lands and instilled with a lifelong fear of sharks that haunts me to this day. So, when I was given the opportunity to speak with him about the positively charming The Long Game, I jumped at the chance.
Based on the novel Mustang Miracle, the film tells the true story of the San Filipe Mustangs. They were a group of Mexican-American teenagers in the 1950’s who stood up to racism through their love for the sport of Golf. Dennis Quaid plays the team’s coach, Frank Mitchell. You can check out my review of the film here.

After Dennis Quaid accepted CinemaCon’s cinema icon award during the closing night Big Screen Achievement Awards, host Kevin Frazier surprised the veteran actor with a birthday cake as the crowd inside the Colosseum sang “Happy Birthday.”
Quaid turned 70 on Tuesday, and it was a fitting celebration for the star, who was feeling particularly reflective about where he’s at in his life and career at this chapter. “I’m on my sixth decade in this wonderful business,” Quaid said in accepting the honor, which arrives as he has The Long Game in theaters this weekend and the release of Reagan on the horizon. “To tell you the truth, I really do feel like I have more fun. Box office preview: Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’ will try its best not to divide the moviegoing nation
After a quieter April opening weekend, we get a slightly busier one with one high profile wide release and a handful of smaller releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big release of the weekend is “Civil War,” filmmaker Alex Garland‘s fourth feature film as a director, and one that is reportedly A24’s biggest budget production, reportedly costing $50 million. Set in a dystopian war-torn future America, the movie stars Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny from “Priscilla” as two wartime journalists heading to D.C. to interview the President (Nick Offerman), who is about to be deposed by a group of opposing rebels. The movie also stars Jesse Plemons, Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
Garland established himself as a screenwriter with films like Danny Boyle‘s “28 Days Later” and the 2012 “Dredd” movie starring Karl Urban, but his 2015 directorial debut “Ex Machina...

The Long Game releases April 12th, 2024.
Inspirational sports films are a dime a dozen. Just like musical biopics, they follow a strict and unwavering formula that any self-respecting cinephile can predict long before settling in to watch. The key to their success is primarily in the execution of that formula. Thanks to a fantastic cast, a tight script and skillful direction from Julio Quintana, The Long Game is a worthy addition to the tried-and-true genre.

I can’t say it was difficult finding nine posters to talk about this month––most new April releases were given the bad Photoshop treatment. Some, like Cash Out, scream Dtv. Some, like Arcadian, try their best to at least make the lighting and coloring look real. Some go the collage route, e.g. The Long Game. And then there are those like Blood for Dust where the actors resemble flat cutouts and their heads bobbling balloons pasted on top.
I’ll never understand a studio’s desire to go that route when a simple film still with effective typography can garner attention for its beauty rather than its superficiality, but that mindset doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. Thankfully there are still those who get it––those who commission posters as an art form and a marketing tool. You can have both.

This article contains spoilers for the finale of "Secret Invasion."
After months and months of anticipation for what Marvel would do with one of the most thrilling storylines to ever grace comics, "Secret Invasion" has officially come to an end -- not with a franchise-shaking bang, unfortunately, but more of a deflating whimper. The noticeably rushed final episode may have wrapped a neat and tidy bow on what was promised to be a sprawling and impossibly complicated plot involving Skrulls taking the Earth as their own home, but viewers were still left with a number of questions and loose ends. Perhaps the biggest of them has to do with one Colonel James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), who was revealed a few weeks back to be a Skrull in disguise. That twist certainly lines up with his much more antagonistic personality in the series, but naturally, that's led fans to wonder:

Bob Lee Swagger remains one of the most badass television characters ever.
The USA Network series, Shooter, was one of the finest, coming at a time when the cable network ran supreme with endless content for everyone's viewing.
With slick action sequences, subterfuge, and adrenaline-pumping thrills, the series, more often than not, was a must-see summer show for three seasons until its unfortunate cancellation.
TV Fanatic followed along with the journey from beginning to end with full coverage in our Shooter Reviews. It is still a perfectly binge-able series that you can stream on Netflix, at least until June 21, when Netflix loses the rights for it.
It bolstered an impressive cast led by none other than Ryan Phillippe. But where is the cast now? Let's find out!
Jaina Lee Ortiz - Angela Tio
Ortiz had a small arc during Shooter Season 2, guest-starring as Angela Tio, a sergeant Bob Lee served with during the Marines.

New Delhi, April 5 (Ians) India’s legendary spin bowler Anil Kumble has recalled his historic all-10 wicket haul against Pakistan, saying that it was one of those special moments when all the players came and lifted him and that’s when he realised the magnitude of what had happened.
Kumble sprung his magic against Pakistan on February 7, 1999, in the Delhi Test to become only the second bowler after England’s Jim Laker (1956) in the history of the game to take all 10 wickets in a single Test innings.
“We had to win the Test match against Pakistan, we had lost the first Test match. At lunchtime, Pakistan were cruising at 100 for no loss. So it was all up to the spinners, the bowlers to do the job. Things started to happen, and everything was unfolding right in front of my eyes. So it was one of those special moments, and all...

When filming The Long Game, major golf enthusiast Dennis Quaid learned something about making a golf movie the the hard way.
“You don’t get to play that much golf at all,” Quaid tells Den of Geek during a visit to our 2023 SXSW studio.
Directed by Julio Quintana, The Long Game is based on the 2012 book Mustang Miracle by Humberto Garcia. Both the book and now the film recount the real life story of the 1955-1957 San Felipe High School Mustangs golf team in Del Rio, Texas, which made up exclusively of Mexican-American players – a first for the sport.
In a time where golf reserved for wealthy and connected white men, five young Mexican-American caddies broke major cultural barriers by assembling a team to compete against (and ultimately defeat) their white peers. It might feel longer, but it’s only been two weeks since “Everything Everywhere All At Once” triumphed at the 95th Academy Awards. And, thankfully, this is a year where there has been no fallout from a physical altercation on stage, an unnecessary ceremony at Union Station, or a Best Picture envelope mishap. And even with a potential strike on the horizon and impending layoffs at the Walt Disney Company, there are more positives than negatives in movieland.

The new film The Long Game follows the true-life story of five teenage Mexican-American caddies who wanted to learn how to play golf. They created their own golf course in the South Texas desert and, without formal training, managed to compete and win against wealthy teams in the 1957 Texas State High School Golf Championship.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, Jay Hernandez, who starts as the boy’s coach, discussed what he wants the audience to get out of the movie.
“Maybe it’s a golf movie but there it’s so much bigger than that, you know,” he began. “It’s a story about perseverance, it’s an underdog story, it is a great sports movie but at the end of the day, you know, you got to get people invested, you gotta get people worked up, and you got to get...

Set in 1956 and ’57, The Long Game abounds in spectacular vintage cars, pristine and gleaming and a signal of the tidy shape of the movie’s narrative. That’s not to say there are no ups and downs, no setbacks and reversals in the drama that unfolds, but director Julio Quintana (The Vessel) has tailored it to reassure, using gentle comic strokes and zingy visuals to explore a true story of sports underdogs and their triumph against bigotry. Jay Hernandez provides the grounded enthusiasm as a high school administrator with a passion for golf and a vision of better things for Mexican Americans like him and his students. Together, he and his coltish team, dubbed the Mustangs, take on the country-club set, with Dennis Quaid providing effortless old-timer charm as a key ally and Cheech Marin on hand as a wiseass Yoda.
