FRAUD

FRAUD!
I have not received any royalties. They refuse to pay royalties in any other way than by paycheck. In my country, Norway, paychecks were outdated five years ago, and the banks completely stopped processing paychecks three years ago.
This issue was not addressed when we signed the agreement. It is essential to be able to pay royalties to their authors. Their ignorance is shocking. They show absolutely no interest in solving this problem. If they create contracts without being able to pay, I consider this to be FRAUD!

Balboa Press

Balboa Press, even though they say they can do things I have found that they are very difficult to deal with.

I have had my book published by them and am still waiting for things to be done. My book was published 8 months ago now. They seem to like to take your money and then it all stops.

Their ROYALTY PAYMENTS are only paid by check or if you have a US bank account they can do a bank transfer. If you live outside the US like I do, and our banks have phased out using checks and do not cash overseas checks anymore but can cash it if you want to pay a large fee.

Now I have to try and get another way to get my ROYALTY PAYMENTS. It seems strange to me that I can do a direct transfer payment to people/businesses overseas personally from my bank to theirs, so I do not understand how they cannot do the same.

BE WARY OF DOING ANY BUSINESS WITH BALBOA PRESS!!

Presently I would suggest to anyone to look into this sort of thing a lot before using any publisher!!

It's too bad I cannot rate balboa a big 0
What a poor and unethical service. Not only do they fail to provide the services I paid for, but also failed to respond to follow-ups regarding the services purchased. Their royalties are not transparent as I purchased several books to test this and never got a royalty for these copies reflected on my account. We are sorry to hear about these challenges, we were in the process of fulfilling your paid services. As for distribution, it is impossible to list all the places your book was/would be available. It is available to any retailer who subscribes to the distribution database. Retailers are free to offer the book at whatever price they would like, we cannot control that. You are paid your royalties on the sale.
I did check your author center and see the sales that you mentioned, they are listed in the sales activity and on the royalty report. Please contact us because we need you to provide some details for us to make payment or you can go to your author account and under account information enter the payment info. I'm constantly hounded to invest more…

I'm constantly hounded to invest more money for promoting my book when I've already spent more than I originally intended.
Also I asked one of your employees what the wholesale price was for a bookstore to purchase directly from Balboa Press. her answer was that booksellers pay the retail price.

We will definitely make sure you do not get any more calls. We do offer marketing services that can be added onto your publishing package. You are never required to purchase these. Some booksellers have accounts with us to get a discount. The reps cannot see this as it is arranged through our channel sales department.

Disgraceful

Disgraceful! Quick to take your money. Book quality is really poor and then they try and sell your book at a ridiculous price that will ensure you will never get any sales! The only efficient service I received was when they eagerly took thousands of dollars from me! NEVER use Balboa to publish your book!

Pushy and salesy

Pushy and salesy.

Unfortunately, my experience with Balboa Press was one where I felt inferior as an experienced Writer and Author.

Carl, was pushy and salesly. He continued to give me timelines and continued calling for an answer. When I decided that they were not the publishers for our book, he told me it was 'not a loss to them'.

What a disgraceful way to treat someone.

We are not numbers, we are people.

Shame on Hayhouse for allowing this to happen under their name and brand.

My experience with Balboa has been smooth sailing from start to publication. It was like belonging to a family who cared about my work. I felt at all times, I was dealing with caring individuals. The cream on the cake was the extraordinarily artistic individual who handled the layout of my pages. Could you take a look and see for yourself? My book is titled "My Feng Shui".

I had a wonderful experience with Balboa

I had a wonderful experience with Balboa. The whole process was simple and fluid. Each assistant was super helpful, friendly, and responsive to any questions I had.

I really appreciated the extra help with marketing ideas.

From other reviews I was worried about hard selling on extra add ons, but that wasn't my experience at all. I had a great call with a marketing director who offered awesome ideas + a great marketing package that I will do later. So they will try to sell you on extra marketing but they respected my decision and I felt no pressure.

Also for first time authors... My book had been revised several times and edited before I started the process with Balboa. They didn't make suggestions on any edits - so you need to feel very confident about your manuscript.

My publishers were friendly, helpful, understanding, and the process went smoothly. I felt very appreciated and they were kind to me. Handovers could be improved

I found handover between different phases of the process was not well managed. I never knew when to stop contacting one person and go to the next.
I think having one point of contact throughout the process to ask and communicate with would be very helpful.
Also, when one phase ended, but I had no idea what was next so I may have messaged the person previously responsible the reply and response time was greatly increased or msgs went unanswered.
The process could use greater clarity.

A disappointing experience all around

Balboa Press and their associated companies fell short in many respects. A long time to reply to requests for information and to follow up and implement what was agreed. Books arrived weeks after they should have been shipped. Changes to book internal and external finalised months after changes submitted and only with several rounds of follow up. Spelling mistakes found due to low English skills of those working for the firm. Constant calls from high pressure sales people to keep selling marketing packages costing thousands of dollars with questionable impact given how many books are on sale around the world. The company appears to be taking advantage of people’s dreams particularly those of older customers writing their life stories.

Balboa assigns representatives that…

Balboa assigns representatives that stay with you throughout the writing and publishing process from start to finish. I love this about Balboa. They do what they say they’re going to do. The author needs stamina and must be well motivated to work through all the details of getting the manuscript completed and uploaded.
I was not as please with the final aspects of design, especially. I felt that close attention was not given to some things, so I had to make requests, which were granted. Royalty percentage is low. Be aware. Overall, I’m happy with balboa services because they have expertise in so many areas.

I am so pleased I chose Balboa initially for the affordability and did not expect the level of courteous, professional and dedicated support I received throughout the entire process. The formatting by Balboa was such. blessing and I am so happy with the finished product. I just received my first case of 250 books and very pleased

extremely helpful company that gives you the option of accepting their advice or following your own ideas. If you should need help they are always ready to give whatever help you need. They don't force their opinions onto you leaving you to decide for yourself.

You will never never know until you give it a go....

The end product was better than I expected. The printing was done in a very fast time ad I was pleased with this. The finished product was very much to my liking. The people I dealt with were always helpful.
The only downside was the constant pressure to buy and spend more without receiving assurances that these additions would do anything to enhance my project. The staff were always ready to listen to me and make suggestions of alternatives

I wish I could give zero stars.
They are interested in you until they get your money then they go into ignoring mode never giving royalties they send you a US cheque you can't cash in Australia then say you have to wait a year for the cheque to expire.
I haven't seen anything I assume they want to hold everyone's money as long as possible. I'm publishing my next book myself. Hay house should be embarrassed to be associated with balboa press at this point!
